Biography

Amitha Domalpally is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She holds an MD and a PhD and serves as the Scientific Director of the A-EYE Research Unit. Domalpally is extensively involved in the clinical trial imaging endpoints for diabetic retinopathy. Her research focuses on employing new imaging techniques to understand the natural history and prognostic markers of diabetic retinopathy. She provides retinal imaging-dependent outcomes for industry-sponsored therapeutic trials and monitors the progression of diabetes-related ocular complications. Her involvement includes NIH-funded multicenter long-term diabetes studies, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS) and the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC). Additionally, she participates as a principal investigator to develop reference standards for diabetic retinopathy screening algorithms utilizing Artificial Intelligence. Domalpally collaborates with diagnostic companies on FDA validation studies related to AI software and internally at UW to develop machine learning algorithms for retinopathy assessment. Her efforts also extend to collaborating with consortium groups to advance the field of diabetic retinopathy severity scales and validate new imaging techniques and biomarkers.
