Ammie Kalan is a field-based primatologist interested in social ecological drivers of behavioral flexibility in wild great apes and understanding hominin evolution from a comparative perspective. Her research focuses on how behavioral flexibility relates to communication, tool use, and foraging ecology in nonhuman cultural traditions, aiming to improve understanding of the behavioral strategies primates use to adapt and survive in increasingly anthropogenic environments affected by climate change. To date, her research has concentrated on wild populations of great apes in Africa. Kalan works to enhance remote methods of studying these animals in the field, incorporating passive acoustic monitoring and camera trapping into her research. Her interests have expanded to include behavioral ecology and conservation of nonhuman primate species, and she collaborates with directors of multiple African great ape field sites while remaining an affiliated researcher with the Pan African Programme. Kalan also serves as a Scientific Moderator for the Chimp&See community science project, where she encourages prospective postgraduate students to reach out through the Great Ape Behaviour Lab website.
