Biography

Amr Elshahat, MBBCh, is an Associate Research Scientist with a deep interest in molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. He completed medical school at Benha University and worked as a primary care physician in underserved areas of Egypt. He primarily joined the Yale Stroke Department as a Visiting Research Scientist in 2023, where he explored predictive factors of intracerebral hemorrhage development leading to post-stroke epilepsy. His collaborations with Yale educators span areas including stroke, movement disorders, and epilepsy. He has developed a particular interest in the pathophysiology and molecular basis of Parkinson’s disease. In October 2024, he transferred to the PET NeuroImaging Program within the Department of Radiology at Yale, focusing on studying PET biomarkers for Parkinson's disease using radiotracers to quantify synaptic density and dopamine availability. By 2025, he began serving as a co-investigator on studies regarding the effects of ketamine and psilocybin treatments for depression related to Parkinson's disease. He has established frequent collaborations with co-authors in his published research.
