Dr. Amro Zayed

Biography

Amro Zayed is a Full Professor and the Chair of the York Research Chair in Genomics within the Department of Biology at York University. His research focuses on the genetics and evolution of social insects, particularly how social behavior affects genome evolution and the genetic basis for social traits. Zayed applies genomic tools to guide the conservation of native pollinators and improve the health of managed honey bees. His students are exposed to a broad array of research opportunities that span the field of bee biology through international collaborations, including those with the YorkU consortium on bee ecology, evolution, and conservation. Zayed has published extensively in reputable journals, highlighting findings in conservation genomics, adaptive molecular evolution, and the impact of environmental stressors on honey bee health. His contributions enhance understanding of the evolutionary processes shaping social behaviors in insects and inform strategies for biodiversity preservation.
