Dr. Amy Bastian

Biography

Amy Bastian is a Professor of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is a neuroscientist and physical therapist, focusing her research on the neural control of human movement, with particular interests in cerebellar motor disorders, childhood motor development, and the effects of stroke. As the director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, her team investigates new movements learned during the recovery from various types of brain damage. Dr. Bastian's academic journey includes a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from the University of Oklahoma and a Ph.D. in movement science from Washington University, where she also completed her postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience. Before her current role, Dr. Bastian served as an assistant professor of physical therapy in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Washington University School of Medicine. She is actively engaged in several professional activities, including leading initiatives for women faculty in science and medicine at Johns Hopkins. Her research aims to improve understanding of movement disorders commonly associated with neurological damage and to develop effective interventions to enhance recovery.
