Biography

Amy Chazkel is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Columbia University, specializing in urban studies and legal history. She received her Ph.D. in History from Yale University in 2002 and also holds an M.A. in History from Yale and a B.A. in International Affairs from George Washington University. Her research primarily focuses on post-colonial Brazil, including urban legal history and the societal impacts of crime and justice. She authored 'Laws of Chance: Brazil’s Clandestine Lottery and the Making of Modern Public Life' (Duke University Press, 2011) and co-edited 'Rio Reader: History, Culture, Politics' (Duke University Press, 2016). Chazkel has received numerous fellowships, including from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies. Her ongoing research examines the social and cultural contexts of law, particularly in relation to urban nighttime life in Rio de Janeiro. Over her eighteen years in academia, she has been involved with various editorial and advisory boards and has contributed extensively to historical scholarship, exploring the intersections of law, society, and urban culture in Latin America.
