Biography

Amy Freed is an accomplished artist-in-residence at Stanford University's Department of Theater and Performance Studies. She has authored numerous plays including 'Restoration Comedy,' 'Beard Avon,' 'Freedomland,' 'Safe Hell,' 'Psychic Life Savages,' and 'Nero.' A recipient of the Charles McArthur Playwriting Award, Joseph Kesselring Award from the New York Arts Club, and several Los Angeles Critics Circle Awards, she was a finalist for the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. Freed’s works have been produced by esteemed theaters across the United States, including South Coast Repertory Theater, New York Theater Workshop, Seattle Repertory Theater, and the American Conservatory Theater. Her recent play, 'Monster Builder,' is under development at Berkeley Rep and South Coast Rep. She holds a Mellon Foundation Playwriting Residency at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Throughout her career, she has also served as a visiting guest playwright at prominent universities, including the University of California at San Diego. Freed’s accolades highlight her significant contributions to the field of playwriting and theater.
