Amy Hagopian, MHA, PhD, served for years as program director of the Community Oriented Public Health Practice program and teaches core health policy courses. She teaches a 4-credit MPH course, Public Health Planning, Advocacy Leadership skills, and a project-based public health skill-building course. Hagopian’s wide-ranging interests are unified by the idea that the maldistribution of power undermines health. She is dedicated, both professionally and personally, to opposing war and promoting peace. Her research includes migration health of workers from poor countries to rich ones and focuses on homelessness and health issues related to incarceration. She co-teaches a course with Evan Kanter, MD, PhD, titled 'War and Health.' Hagopian led a team that estimated mortality associated with the 2003 invasion of Iraq and has conducted extensive research on the effects of war on health. She is active in the American Public Health Association’s international health section and peace caucus, and was the 2018 recipient of APHA’s Vic Sidel Barry Levy Peace Award. Additionally, she serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Public Health and the Nuclear Weapons Task Force of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility.
