Biography

Amy E. Herr is the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and a faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Her research group focuses on bioinstrumentation, applying scale-dependent phenomena to design tools for quantifying biomolecules in complex biological fluids and at the single-cell level with sub-cellular resolution. These advancements have applications in clinical diagnostics and biomarker validation. Herr earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 2002, following a Master’s in the same field in 1999 and a Bachelor’s in Engineering & Applied Science from the California Institute of Technology in 1997. She has received numerous awards, including the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator designation and the Sciex Microscale Separations Innovation Medal. In addition to her extensive academic and research appointments, she has contributed to the field through various editorial board memberships and committee roles in professional organizations, furthering the development of bioengineering disciplines.
