Dr. Amy Lawton

Biography

Amy joined the Edinburgh Law School in 2021 and serves as a Senior Lecturer in Tax Law, as well as the Director of Undergraduate Studies. She founded the Scottish Tax Clinic, a notable initiative that connects law students with tax professionals to provide free tax advice to low-income individuals, ultimately saving tens of thousands of pounds for people across Scotland. Amy's research interests focus broadly on the intersection of tax and the environment, with a particular emphasis on environmental taxation and clinical tax education. Her recent investigations delve into how tax professionals perceive taxation and how environmental taxation can influence business behavior regarding energy consumption. Furthermore, she was awarded the 2020 Abe Greenbaum Research Fellowship at the University of New South Wales and is an active member of the Tax Research Network Research Committee. Beyond her academic contributions, Amy has authored articles for professional tax magazines, including the Taxation Tax Adviser, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is also keen to supervise PhD candidates with proposals in tax law, environmental taxation, tax education, or tax policy.
