Amy H. Liu specializes in ethnic politics, language policies, international migration, and has a regional focus on Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. Her current research examines Chinese communities in Eastern Europe, specifically in Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia. She conducted field studies on Chinese migrant communities in Romania, supporting her work with a 2015-2016 J. William Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award. Liu has produced a significant body of scholarly work, including a book and numerous journal articles that analyze the political causes, economic consequences, and social implications of language policies. She completed her Ph.D. in Political Science at Emory University in 2009 and holds a B.A. in Mathematics and Government from Smith College (2002). Liu is an active member of the academic community as the Convener of the Southeast Asia Research Group since 2016 and served on the Executive Board of the Language Politics Research Committee of the International Political Science Association from 2012 to 2016. She was awarded a Faculty Research Grant from the Center for European Studies at the University of Texas at Austin (2015-2016) and received various fellowships including the Council of American Overseas Research Centers Multi-Country Fellowship (2014).
