Dr. Amy Murphy

Biography

Amy Murphy is a Professor and Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs at the University of Southern California (USC), where she has taught since 1999. She holds degrees in Fine Art (BFA, Rhode Island School of Design, 1986), Architecture (BArch, Rhode Island School of Design, 1987), Film Production (MFA, USC School of Cinematic Arts, 1994), and Media Studies (Ph.D., USC School of Cinematic Arts, 2017). Her academic work focuses on the intersection of cinema and urban experience, with notable publications such as "The Future Tradition of Nature" (2009), "New Orleans, Nature, Apocalyptic Trope" (2010), and "Nothing Like New: Post-Apocalyptic Imagination and Utopian Desire" (2013). Murphy has led significant projects like the "Paul Revere Williams Archive Initiative" and co-curated exhibitions related to architectural and cinematic history. Additionally, she has received awards, including the title of "Educator of the Year" from the AIA Los Angeles Board of Directors in 2024. Murphy is also known for her practice in design, founding Amy Murphy Projects in 1996, and has served on various committees and as a director of non-profit organizations focused on experimental media.
