Dr. Amy Powell

Biography

Amy Knight Powell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at USC Dornsife. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on Northern European art and visual culture from the late medieval to the early modern period (1400 – 1700), with a particular emphasis on painting, early Netherlandish art, and Baroque styles, contextualized globally. Powell explores significant themes such as iconoclasm, abstraction, and the ideological constructs related to gender and race that influence artistic expression. Her publications include books such as 'Depositions: Scenes Late Medieval Church Modern Museum,' and numerous articles in esteemed journals detailing her insights into art historical narratives and the cultural significance of visual materials.
