Biography

Amy L. Sankaran is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Law School and the Director of Externship Pro Bono Programs. She has been with Michigan Law since 2011, where she plays a crucial role in supervising full-time placements for students in various capacities within South Africa and India. In 2011, she launched the part-time externship program at Michigan Law, allowing students to gain experience in local government, nonprofit, and judicial placements. As the pro bono program director, she identifies relevant projects for law firms and organizations where law students can provide assistance, and actively recruits and guides students in their pro bono engagements. Prior to her role at Michigan Law, Sankaran served as a litigation associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP in Washington, DC, and as an adoption attorney for the Children’s Law Center in Washington, DC. She returned to the Law School in 2005 to become the Assistant Director of Admissions and subsequently became an attorney-adviser focused on government and nonprofit careers. In 2009, she was responsible for launching the Pro Bono Pledge. Sankaran is also a member of the Michigan Bar Pro Bono Initiative and remains active in the practice of law, primarily focusing on child advocacy and domestic violence issues.
