Dr. Amy Zhang

Biography

Amy Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where she started in Spring 2023. She is also a fellow in the Jack Kilby/Texas Instruments Endowed Faculty Fellowship and an affiliate member of the Texas Robotics Consortium. Her research focuses on improving sample efficiency and generalization in reinforcement learning algorithms, bridging theory and practice, and developing innovative decision-making algorithms for real-world problems. Amy completed her PhD in computer science at McGill University, where she was advised by Joelle Pineau and Doina Precup. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a research scientist at Facebook AI Research and held a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley. She obtained her M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and dual B.Sci. degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Amy has also spent years serving on the board of directors for Women in Machine Learning.
