Biography

Ana Arjona is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University, where she also serves as the Director of the Center for the Study of Security and Drugs at Los Andes University in Bogota, Colombia. She obtained her PhD in political science from Yale University with distinction and has held positions including Fellow at the Earth Institute at Columbia University and the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on the dynamics and legacies of organized violence, particularly in the contexts of civil wars, organized crime, and local governance. Arjona is the author of the award-winning book 'Rebelocracy: Social Order in the Colombian Civil War' published by Cambridge University Press in 2016, and she has co-edited 'Rebel Governance in Civil War'. Her extensive publication record includes studies on civilian cooperation and resistance in with non-state armed groups, the role of institutions in wartime social orders, and broader themes of conflict, democracy, and violence in Latin America. Her ongoing research seeks to explore the foundations of political order in societies emerging from violence.
