Professor Ana Barros was born in Africa and grew up in Angola and Portugal, later living in the United States. She earned her Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1993. Barros has held faculty positions at the University of Porto, Penn State University, and Harvard University before joining Duke University in 2004. Her primary research interests are in Hydrology, Hydrometeorology, and Environmental Physics, focusing on water-cycle processes within coupled land-atmosphere-biosphere systems, particularly in regions with complex terrains. She has been actively involved in numerous professional organizations and has held editorial roles in esteemed journals. Barros is particularly proud of her involvement with students, many of whom have pursued advanced degrees in science and engineering, and has received multiple prestigious awards throughout her career.
