Ana Maria de Roda Husman studied Molecular Biology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1991). She obtained her doctorate in 1995 with her dissertation ‘Human Papillomaviruses cervical carcinogenesis’ at the VU medical center, Amsterdam. She then worked on a postdoctoral research project titled ‘Viral host determinants HIV-1 infection AIDS pathogenesis’ at the Central Laboratory for the Blood Transfusion Service Sanquin in Amsterdam. Since 2009, she has led the Environmental Department at the Centre for Infectious Disease Control (CIb) at RIVM. In May 2012, Ana Maria de Roda Husman was appointed a professor of ‘Global Changes and Environmentally Transmitted Infectious Diseases’ at Utrecht University. Her work involves both RIVM and Utrecht University focusing on the prevention and control of infectious diseases transmitted through the environment, such as water, soil, and air. Climate change and technological developments play a significant role in exposure to pathogenic viruses, parasites, and bacteria. She collaborates with Utrecht University, STOWA, Rioned, municipalities, and water authorities on developments in sanitation of the water system.
