Biography

Ana Schwartz is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of English. Her research focuses on American literature prior to 1900, with particular expertise in poetry poetics and literary cultural theory, especially Foucauldian criticism. She is the author of the book 'Unmoored: Search for Sincerity in Colonial America' (OIEAHC UNC Press, Jan 2023), which explores the historical imagining of sincerity ideals. In addition to her book, her essays have been published in 'Early American Literature' and 'PMLA', and she is currently working on a project titled 'Ordinary Unhappiness: A Social History of the Soul', which examines the emergence of personal responsibility amidst the disciplines of racial capitalism and psychoanalysis in early modernity. Schwartz has also written a short play, 'Invincible', which serves as an allegory for settler colonial longing.
