Biography

Ana C. Thomé Williams is a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of São Paulo. Her research interests encompass Intercultural Communication, Foreign Language Acquisition, and Portuguese Language Teaching and Learning. Ana's MA research focused on the relationship between age and the onset of learning foreign languages in school, particularly with preschool children learning English in public schools in Brazil. Her PhD dissertation addressed cultural aspects of language teaching and learning through a cross-linguistic cultural comparison of French and Brazilian soccer announcers' discourse, culminating in a published book, "O Jogo Narrado, um cruzamento linguístico-cultural da locução de futebol Brasil e na França". She has presented her findings at various conferences across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Ana is currently preparing a book for intermediate Portuguese students and co-organizing a publication addressing the pedagogical challenges of teaching Portuguese during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, she is a co-founder and co-chair of the Illinois Portuguese Language Connection and holds an officer position in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages for the Portuguese Special Interest Group.
