Biography

Anabela Rato is an Associate Professor and the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies in the Department of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies at the University of Toronto. She acts as the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Portuguese Studies. Rato holds a Licenciatura in Portuguese and English Teaching, a Master’s degree in English Language, Literature and Culture, and a Ph.D. in Language Sciences from the University of Minho, Portugal. Her research interests encompass heritage language acquisition, speech perception and production, phonetic training, applied phonetics, and sound variation. Rato has extensive administrative experience, including serving as Associate Chair of Portuguese Studies from 2019 to 2023 and conducting various responsibilities within the department. Through her work, she aims to contribute to the field of linguistics and enhance the understanding of language acquisition processes.
