Biography

Analays Alvarez Hernandez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Montreal. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her research interests focus on contemporary artistic practices, particularly those occurring in public spaces, explored through the lenses of postcolonial, decolonial, and diasporic studies. She is currently investigating the emergence of Latinx Canadian artistic scenes and the challenges faced by Latinx artists within institutional artistic settings in Montreal. Dr. Alvarez Hernandez has received significant research funding, including a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for the study of domestic art galleries in post-socialist countries. She collaborates with an international network, Transnational Transcultural Art Culture Exchange (TrACE), to address issues of cultural transfer and decolonial approaches within art institutions. Her upcoming projects include exploring the decolonization of public art and a colloquium focused on ethical public art in Canada.
