Biography

Anand Yang is a Professor in the Jackson School of International Studies and History at the University of Washington, Seattle. He served as the Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and holds the Golub Chair of International Studies. Before joining the University of Washington in 2002, Yang taught at Sweet Briar College and the University of Utah, where he chaired the History Department and directed the Asian Studies Program. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College and a PhD in History from the University of Virginia. Yang’s publications include significant works such as 'Limited Raj: Agrarian Relations in Colonial India' and 'Bazaar India: Peasants, Traders, Markets and the Colonial State in Gangetic Bihar'. He has edited volumes like 'Interactions: Transregional Perspectives on World History' and has contributed numerous articles to journals specializing in Asian Studies, History, and Social Sciences. His current research focuses on coerced Indian labor in Southeast Asia and Chinese-South Asian labor migrations during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additionally, he serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Asian Studies and Peasant Studies and is involved with the American Council of Learned Societies and the Council of International Exchange Scholars. Yang has held leadership positions in professional organizations including President of the Association for Asian Studies and President of the World History Association.
