Dr. Anant Parekh

Biography

Anant Parekh is a Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. He previously studied at University College, where he obtained both undergraduate and doctoral degrees. As an Alexander Von Humboldt Scholar, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany, under the guidance of distinguished professors such as Erwin Neher, Walter Stuehmer, and Reinhold Penner. In 1997, he returned to Oxford as a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow and later held positions including Sir Edward Abraham Research Fellow at Keble College and Lister Institute Senior Research Fellow. He was appointed a University Lecturer with a Tutorial Fellowship at Lady Margaret Hall and in 2002 achieved a personal chair. His research primarily focuses on intracellular calcium signaling and its effects on cellular responses, particularly store-operated calcium channels and their interaction with organelles like mitochondria, which play critical roles in various diseases. He has received numerous awards including the Wellcome Prize in Physiology and is a member of the Academia Europaea and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
