Biography

Anastasia Chamberlen is a Professor of Sociology and co-director of the Centre for the Study of Women & Gender at the University of Warwick. She has been at Warwick since 2016, having previously lectured in Criminology at Birkbeck, University of London. Chamberlen completed her BA (Hons) in History and Sociology at the University of Warwick, followed by an MPhil in Criminology at the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. at King’s College London. Her research interests are situated at the intersection of theoretical criminology and sociology, particularly focusing on punishment, prisons, feminist theory, and the study of emotions and embodiment. Her empirical work explores themes such as the lived experiences of imprisonment, the embodied aspects of women's survival strategies in prison, and the relationship between emotions and the motivations for punishment. Chamberlen's current projects include 'Captive Arts', which investigates the relationship between arts and imprisonment, and 'Vulnerable State', which explores the emotional economies of state power.
