Biography

Anastasia Giannakidou is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Chicago, where she also serves as the Frank J. McLoraine Professor and holds several directorial roles, including Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies and Co-Director of the Center for Gesture and Sign Language. Her academic journey began with a degree in Classical Philology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, followed by a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, obtained in 1997. Since joining the University of Chicago in 2001, Giannakidou has focused her research on linguistic meaning, particularly in relation to subjectivity and ideology as expressed through language. Her work emphasizes the syntax-semantics interface and linguistic variation, exploring languages such as Modern Greek, German, Dutch, Spanish, Basque, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese. She has authored several significant publications, including on topics such as polarity sensitivity, nominalization, and the interplay between mood, tense, and aspect. Currently, she is working on a book titled 'Truth, Veridicality, Grammar, and Thought', to be published by the University of Chicago Press.
