Dr. Anastasios Karadimitris is a Professor of Hematology at Imperial College London and the Co-Director of the Centre for Hematology. His research focuses on three main areas. First, he investigates the molecular and cellular pathogenesis of multiple myeloma, particularly the characterization of myeloma-propagating cells and the role of transcription factor deregulation in the disease’s pathogenesis. He also studies the mechanisms of osteoclast activation in relation to bone disease associated with myeloma. Second, he researches the biology of glycolipid-specific T cells and their therapeutic potential in hematological diseases, with a focus on invariant NKT cells in allogeneic stem cell transplantation and the implications of glycosylphosphatidylinositol-specific T cells in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. Lastly, he aims to understand the transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms behind housekeeping gene regulation and its therapeutic implications for autosomal recessive Mendelian diseases, utilizing models of inherited GPI deficiency disorders. Dr. Karadimitris employs a variety of molecular and cell biology techniques, genomics, advanced flow cytometry, and animal models in his research, which increasingly incorporates systems biology approaches through collaboration with Prof. Michael Stumpf's group at Imperial College.
