Dr. Anastasios Vassilopoulos

Biography

Anastasios Vassilopoulos is a Professor and Head of the Composite Mechanics group at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), specializing in the areas of composite materials and structural mechanics. With a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, he has built a strong academic career with significant contributions to the study of composite materials, particularly in the context of fatigue and structural performance. His research interests encompass offshore renewables, the mechanical behavior of composite joints in wind turbine rotor blades, analytical methods for composite material stress states, and fatigue life prediction methodologies. Professor Vassilopoulos has held various academic positions including Senior Scientist and Adjunct Professor at EPFL. He has contributed extensively to the literature on composite materials, publishing numerous research articles and reports in recognized journals and conferences. His teaching includes advanced composites engineering and the mechanics of materials, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in structural design. Through his work, he aims to advance the understanding of composite materials' behavior in diverse applications, contributing to innovative solutions in structural engineering and renewable energy.
