Biography

Anastassios Anastassiadis is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Classical Studies at McGill University, holding the Phrixos B. Papachristidis Chair in Modern Greek Studies. His academic journey began in Greece, leading to the United States, where he developed a unique expertise intersecting physics and philosophy with historical studies. He completed his doctorate at Sciences-Po in Paris in 2006. His research focuses on human mobilities, transnational networks, and the role of educational institutions in state formation within the Greek and Balkan contexts from the modern era. He has published extensively on the interactions between religion and state during the Ottoman period, and has contributed to discussions on open science and digital humanities. He led the Immigrec project, emphasizing the oral history of Greek immigration to Canada, and has co-piloted a research project on the Global Civilian History of the Forgotten Army during World War I. He teaches courses on European history, modern Greek culture, and the classical tradition, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of Greece's historical context in relation to the Greek-speaking world and the broader European narrative.
