Biography

Associate Professor Anders Hayden grew up in Alberta and moved to Nova Scotia for work. After completing his PhD at Boston College, he returned to Canada and accepted a position in the Department of Political Science at Dalhousie University. As an undergraduate student, he developed interests in political economy and environmental questions, pursuing studies across disciplinary boundaries. He holds a B.A. in Political Science, a Master’s in Environmental Studies, and a PhD in Sociology. Hayden teaches a fourth-year course on Politics and Climate Change, focusing on responses to environmental challenges and the balance between ecological modernization and sufficiency. He emphasizes the importance of a Political Science degree in providing students with critical thinking, analytical, and research skills applicable in various careers, including government, law, and international development. His research includes examining the political policy impacts of alternative measures of well-being, such as the sufficiency approach and the Gross National Happiness index.
