Dr. André Krouwel

Biography

André Krouwel teaches Political Science Communication at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and is the founder and co-owner of Kieskompas (Election Compass), with a significant role in developing Vote Advice Applications globally. His research centers on political parties, elections, voting behavior, public opinion, populism, Euroscepticism, and the dynamics of political extremism versus moderation. Krouwel authored a PhD thesis on the transformation of political parties in Western Europe, with key findings published in 'Party Transformations in European Democracies' by SUNY Press. His scholarly work includes numerous articles and book chapters on voting behavior, elections, and the roles of political parties and social movements, contributing to the discourse on how new political parties and actors emerge. Recent projects have analyzed negative political attitudes, including political cynicism, EU rejectionism, and anti-establishment sentiments among European voters. Krouwel's interests in applying scientific knowledge practically led to the creation of Election Compass, which helps voters identify the political party that aligns closest with their preferences. His work also explores the socio-political landscape following significant political transitions in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in light of the Berlin Wall's fall and the Arab Uprisings.
