Biography

André Magnan is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Studies at the University of Regina. His research and teaching interests include sociology, agri-food systems, globalization, development, and sociological theory. He is currently leading a multi-year research project on digitalization, financialization, and the consolidation of the Canadian food sector, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. This project critically examines the technological changes and the growing influence of financial corporate actors in agriculture and their impact on the restructuring of food and farming. Dr. Magnan has documented how financial investors are acquiring prairie farmland on a large scale, exploring the implications for family farmers, rural communities, and the agricultural industry. His work also investigates the history and politics of grain marketing in the Canadian prairies, with a focus on the rise and fall of the Canadian Wheat Board, one of Canada’s significant agricultural institutions. Dr. Magnan’s research history on the Canada-UK wheat trade was published in his book, "Wheat King," through UBC Press in 2016.
