Biography

André Sorensen is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto. His current research examines urban institutions, institutional change, temporal processes of urbanization, urban governance, and a comparative historical institutionalist perspective, focusing on urban land, property development, infrastructure management, and megacities. He has published over 60 papers and chapters and has co-edited 5 books, including the 'International Handbook of Megacities and Megacity-Regions' and the monograph 'The Making of Urban Japan: Cities and Planning from Edo to the 21st Century' (Routledge, 2002), which won the book prize from the International Planning History Society in 2004. His paper 'Taking Path Dependence Seriously' published in 'Planning Perspectives' won the Association of European Schools of Planning Paper Award in 2016. Sorensen's work significantly contributes to the understanding of urban property systems and sustainability transitions.
