Biography

Andrea Alimonti is a full professor and the Director of the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR) at the Università della Svizzera italiana, where he leads the Molecular Oncology Group. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and completed his medical training in oncology at the National Cancer Institute of Rome. Alimonti has undergone postdoctoral fellowship training in cancer biology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Harvard Medical School in Boston. In 2010, he joined IOR as the head of the Molecular Oncology Group and was appointed as the new Director in January 2024. Alimonti is recognized for his significant contributions to cancer research, having received numerous prestigious awards and competitive grants such as the EMBO Young Investigator Award, Swiss Bridge Award, ERC Starting Grants, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation Award. His research encompasses cancer immunology, immunotherapy, and the mechanisms of therapy resistance in prostate cancer, particularly focusing on cellular senescence and the role of gut microbiota in treatment resistance. Alimonti's work aims to develop innovative therapeutic approaches for cancer patients, with several of his findings currently being tested in clinical settings.
