Biography

Prof. Armani received her B.A. in Physics from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology. She has received numerous awards including the ONR Young Investigator and the PECASE, and was named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. She currently serves as the Director of the Northrop Grumman Institute of Optical Nanomaterials and Nanophotonics. Her overarching mission in research is to develop novel nonlinear materials and integrated optical devices for use in portable disease diagnostics and telecommunications. Her research spans a wide range of topics including materials synthesis, integrated optics, instrument development, and computational modeling. In materials synthesis, she employs a variety of growth methods and polymerization reactions to create new optically active and responsive materials. By leveraging these materials, she has invented devices for fundamental science and biodetection applications. A core focus of her work is on developing low-cost, portable instruments for diagnostics and prognostics across a wide range of diseases, complemented by experimental work in FEM and FDTD modeling.
