Dr. Andrea Baker

Biography

Andrea Baker is an award-winning journalism scholar and educator with extensive experience across continents, disciplines, and industries. She has held various leadership roles within academia, media, and health industries, including serving as the Acting Head of the Journalism department at Monash University. Baker's research interests encompass a wide range of topics within Journalism Studies, focusing on Artificial Intelligence, safety of journalists, the dynamics of alternative media in the Global South and Global North, and feminist journalism studies addressing violence against women. As an educator, she has pioneered significant initiatives such as Monash Journalism's first internship program and the establishment of an online student newspaper. Baker has supervised numerous postgraduate theses and received competitive fellowships from prestigious institutions. Her scholarly contributions include more than 80 published works, including five books. A graduate of Monash University with a PhD in Digital Communications, she continues to shape policy debates in journalism and media training initiatives. Baker is also noted for her involvement in global collaborations addressing issues of gender and press freedom and has been recognized for her innovative pedagogical practices in journalism education.
