Biography

Andrea Birdsall is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on the international politics of judicial intervention. Birdsall's primary research interests lie at the intersection of International Relations and International Law, with particular emphasis on human rights and counterterrorism issues. Her current investigation centers on how states' contentious counterterrorism measures impact human rights, including the use of drones and targeted killings. Additionally, Andrea examines issues related to the deprivation of citizenship from so-called 'foreign terrorist fighters' and the resulting implications for International Law and normative change. Andrea is a collaborator on a Royal Society of Edinburgh funded project that assesses the potential for human rights within Scotland's external relations. She is also involved with the Global Justice Academy and the Centre for Security Research (CeSeR) and serves as a co-editor for the journal Global Constitutionalism. Birdsall teaches courses on human rights and counterterrorism and supervises MSc dissertations in these areas.
