Biography

Andrea Ellner is an interdisciplinary scholar who holds a PhD in Political Science with a focus on International Relations from the Free University of Berlin, as well as an MA in History and German Literature from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. Her research concentrates on gender security, the integration of women into armed forces, and civil-military relations with a particular emphasis on moral injury. Since joining the Department of Defence Studies in 2007, she has taught at the Graduate Institute of Political and International Studies at the University of Reading and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal European Security from 2004 to 2008. As a visiting scholar at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, she has contributed valuable insights into military ethics and civilian-military relations. Ellner is actively involved in the academic community, frequently presenting her work and providing expert advice at various international forums. Her research interests span several pivotal issues, including Women, Peace, and Security, gender integration in military contexts, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding moral injury among armed forces personnel. She is also a member of the Euro-ISME and the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Ellner currently leads the School of Security Studies Research Theme on Society, Culture, & Law, examining the dynamics of these concepts in relation to military ethics and decision-making in security environments.
