Biography

Andrea Goulet is a Professor of French Francophone Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests encompass the 19th to 21st-century French novel, science literature, visual studies, spatial theory, urbanism, and popular crime fiction, including detective novels. Goulet has published significant works such as 'Optiques: Science Eye Birth Modern French Fiction' and 'Legacies Rue Morgue: Space Science French Crime Fiction', and she co-edited 'Orphan Black: Performance, Gender, Biopolitics'. Throughout her career, she has explored the contributions of various French authors, discussing topics like Franco-American Edisonades and car culture in noir literature. In her administrative roles, Goulet has served as the national Co-Chair of the Nineteenth-Century French Studies Association and as the Chair of the Francophone, Italian, and Germanic Studies Department from 2022 to 2025. Currently, she is working on a new book project titled 'Shady Quakers', which investigates representations of the Society of Friends in 19th-century popular culture. She has taught an array of courses, including Modern Literary Theory and Criticism, Crime City, and various aspects of 19th-century French literature.
