Biography

Andrea Leiter is an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Law, specializing in Public International Law. Her research focuses on technology-enabled governance and the Sustainable Global Economic Law (SGEL) project. Andrea’s investigations delve into global inequality, transnational law-making, and the role of private actors in the digital economy, particularly concerning blockchain technology. She is currently supported by a VENI grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) for her project '(Re)coding Value(s) Digital Economy', scheduled from 2024 to 2027. Andrea obtained her PhD through a jointly awarded degree program at the University of Melbourne and the University of Vienna, under the auspices of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Her dissertation, titled ‘Making World Safe for Investment: Protection of Foreign Property 1922-1959’, was published by Cambridge University Press. Andrea has been a junior faculty member at the Institute for Global Law and Policy at Harvard Law School and is a co-founder of the Sovereign Nature Initiative, which explores the intersection of ecology, economy, and technology. She serves in various editorial capacities, including as Editor for the Crypto Law Review and Managing Editor for the Glossary of Distributed Technologies in the Internet Policy Review. Additionally, Andrea participates in initiatives such as the COALA Working Group on DAO Model Law and has advised on projects with the German Development Agency GIZ Blockchain Lab, focusing on international water governance and smart contracts.
