Biography

Professor Andrea Malaspina has extensive clinical expertise in neuromuscular disorders and a track record in researching biological mechanisms and biomarkers of neurodegeneration. He completed his specialist training in Neurology and obtained a PhD in Molecular Neurobiology from Imperial College London in 2021. In 2002, he became a Consultant Neurologist at Barts Health, where he took an active role in Clinical Neurology research, particularly in neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders. In 2009, Professor Malaspina founded the Royal London (now Barts Health) MND Care Research Centre, where he serves as MND Research Director for DeNDRoN LCRN North-Thames. He held a formal academic appointment as Clinical Senior Lecturer at Barts London Medical School in 2012 and became a Reader in Clinical Neurology in 2015. In 2019, he was promoted to Professor of Neurology and established a neurodegeneration group at the Blizard Institute. He is also the Clinical Academic Lead at the newly created ALS Centre at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, focusing on the intersection of patient care and research.
