Biography

Andrea Paras is an Associate Professor and Director of the Guelph Institute of Development Studies at the University of Guelph. She joined the University in 2012 after serving as an Assistant Professor at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Her current SSHRC-funded research explores the role of Catholic healthcare institutions in Canada, particularly their ability to maintain Catholic identity within a diverse socio-religious context. Additionally, her work examines the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Canada’s foreign aid sector, focusing on small and medium organizations and the strategies they adopted to localize and decolonize aid. Dr. Paras has published extensively in the fields of intercultural studies, international relations, and humanitarianism, and her work has been featured in top academic journals and publications. She actively teaches subjects related to international development, human rights, and community-engaged research, and has designed international field schools in Nepal and India. Throughout her career, she has received multiple teaching and research awards, including a significant SSHRC grant.
