Biography

Andrea Maria Pelliconi is a lecturer in Human Rights Law at the University of Southampton and a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. She co-leads the Programmes Committee of the Young International Criminal Lawyers Association (AYICL). Her research focuses on demographic engineering in international law, exploring the intersections of public demography, forced displacement, and genocide. In 2024, she received a two-year British Academy-Leverhulme Small Grant project titled 'Demographic Engineering in Apartheid Western Sahara,' in collaboration with Victor Kattan from the University of Nottingham. Andrea is also interested in climate-related involuntary mobility and is the founder and co-convenor of the ICON-S Interest Group on Migration and Climate Change. She is a Research Manager for the Climate Mobility Community Action Network (CMCAN). Andrea holds a PhD in International Law from The City Law School, University of London, an Advanced Master in International Protection of Human Rights from Sapienza University, Rome, and a combined Bachelor and Master of Law with a major in Public International Law from Bocconi University, Milan. She was awarded the 2024 Georg Schwarzenberger Prize in International Law. Before joining the University of Southampton, Andrea worked as a Teaching Associate at the University of Nottingham and held teaching assistant positions at several prestigious institutions including the London School of Economics (LSE) and City, University of London. She has also held research fellowships at the University of Bologna and the Max Planck Institute for International and European Regulatory Procedural Law in Luxembourg. Andrea is a qualified lawyer (non-practicing) with the Rome Bar in Italy, and prior to her academic career, she worked in private practice including with the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) and the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC).
