Biography

Andrea Rocci is a full professor in language sciences and the deputy director of the Institute of Argumentation, Linguistics, and Semiotics at Università della Svizzera italiana. He co-directs the Master of European Studies in Investor Relations and Financial Communication (ESIR) in collaboration with the Catholic University of Milan. Rocci graduated in literature and studied Discourse Analysis at the University of Geneva, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in linguistic sciences. He has published extensively in the fields of argumentation, pragmatics, semantics, and discourse analysis including a monograph titled 'Modality in Argumentation' published by Springer in 2017, a co-authored textbook on linguistics titled 'Global Linguistics' published by De Gruyter in 2009, and has co-edited 'Verbal Communication,' an encyclopedic volume published by De Gruyter in 2016. His projects, directed or co-directed, focusing on argumentation in journalism and financial communication, have been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Rocci's research interests center on argumentation, particularly the intersection of linguistic sciences with ordinary reasoning processes and persuasive discourse analysis in various communicative contexts. His theoretical research highlights the relationship between argumentation and the semantic-pragmatic aspects of language, focusing on modal and evidential structures and their role in counter-argumentation. He is also interested in multimodal argumentation, specifically the interaction of text and images in advertising and educational discourse.
