Biography

Andrea Russell received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1986 and her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Utah in 1989. Following her doctoral studies, she was a National Research Council Fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory from 1990 to 1991 before moving to the UK. She began her academic career as a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool from 1991 to 1993, then moved to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne where she served as a Lecturer from 1993 to 1997. In 1997, she joined the University of Southampton as a Lecturer, later being promoted to Senior Lecturer and Reader before becoming a Professor of Physical Electrochemistry in 2007. Throughout her career, she has authored and co-authored over 100 refereed papers and has chaired numerous international conferences and symposia. Her research primarily focuses on the development and application of synchrotron-based spectroscopic techniques for the operando characterization of electrocatalysts and electrode materials used in fuel cells, metal-air batteries, water electrolysers, and gas sensors. She is well-known for her situ operando X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies, especially in PEM fuel cells, and collaborates on projects involving microplastics and vibrational spectroscopy in heritage analysis.
