Dr. Andrea Tapia

Biography

Andrea Tapia is the Dean and Professor at the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State University. She oversees aspects of the college's pursuit of excellence in information technology education and research while managing initiatives to attract students, faculty, and staff while supporting their development. Tapia has a strong ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the college, alongside stewardship of its financial resources. Since joining the College of IST in 2002, she was awarded tenure in 2010 and was promoted to full professor in 2019. She has served as the director of graduate programs and is actively involved in the college's social organizational informatics research area. Recently named interim dean from August 2023 to May 2024, she previously served as associate dean for research, where she was responsible for driving the college's research priorities, fostering collaboration with institutional, federal, and industry partners, and representing IST's research-related activities. As an international scholar in crisis informatics, she examines how information technology impacts social, cultural, political, economic, and organizational structures.
