Dr. Andreas Bendlin

Biography

Andreas Bendlin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Toronto, focusing on Ancient History and Material Culture. He earned his master's degree in Classical Languages with distinction from the University of Tübingen in Germany, followed by a PhD in Ancient History from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He later completed his habilitation in Religious Studies at the University of Erfurt, Germany. Professor Bendlin has held research fellowships at the Universities of Oxford, Bochum, and Constance and has accepted research and teaching invitations across four continents, including Cape Town, Heidelberg, Jerusalem, and Rome. His research publications primarily concentrate on ancient religion, with a special interest in the pragmatics of religious life in the Roman Mediterranean. His works examine Roman social history, particularly focusing on the life of associations in the Graeco-Roman world, as well as Roman literary and cultural history. Current research involves a large-scale project on demography, migration, urbanism, and the impact of religious pluralism in the city of Rome. He teaches a wide range of undergraduate courses at various levels and supervises students in the Graduate Program in the Department of Classics.
