Andreas Bergdahl joined Concordia University in July 2009 after spending three years as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University. He previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at the August Krogh Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he taught in the Department of Cell Biology. Bergdahl received his PhD in Medical Physiology from Lund University in Sweden, and has a strong background in molecular biology and protein chemistry, having completed his MSc in Chemical Engineering at Lund Institute of Technology, Lund University. His main research interests are focused on understanding physiological stressful situations such as exercise and pathophysiological conditions, particularly in relation to cardiovascular diseases. His lab studies the differentiation and functional properties of smooth muscle cells, examining how these depend on the cellular environment. They also investigate the processes involved in endothelial damage and atherosclerotic lesion formation using advanced techniques in electrophysiology, isometric force measurements, functional proteomics, molecular genetics, and advanced imaging. The overarching goal of his research is to define the conditions essential for normal cellular function and vascular wall differentiation, hoping to generate new therapeutic approaches for the prevention of vascular disease.
