Andreas Max Ernst received his doctorate in biochemistry from Heidelberg University, Germany, where he worked in the laboratory of Dr. Felix Wieland and Dr. Britta Brügger. He subsequently joined the lab of Dr. James E. Rothman at Yale School of Medicine as a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist. In July 2020, Andreas became a faculty member in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on the early secretory pathway in eukaryotic cells, particularly the interactions between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. He investigates the mechanisms that enable efficient processing and sorting of cellular components, using a combination of approaches including super-resolution electron microscopy and functional assays to elucidate the principles governing cellular organization and function.
