Andreas Hörnblad obtained his PhD in Molecular Medicine from Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine (UCMM) in 2012, focusing on the biology of developing adult mouse pancreas using 3D microscopy techniques such as Optical Projection Tomography. During this period, he developed tools for spatial quantitative analysis of protein expression applied to mouse models of diseased pancreas. His thesis work earned him a postdoctoral grant through the Marie Curie/EIPOD program, allowing him to join the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany. His research there focused on investigating the role of putative regulatory enhancers in limb and brain development, utilizing extensive in vivo genome editing approaches, particularly CRISPR/Cas9 technology. In 2017, he joined the lab of Professor Helena Edlund at Umeå University as a postdoc, where he was investigating the mechanisms of β-cell stress in obesity and type 2 diabetes. Since late 2018, he has been a principal investigator at UCMM, concentrating on enhancer function in disease development, especially the role of obesity in liver cancer.
